Impact of Excise Tax on Plans for Early Retirees Exceeding the Threshold

Source of Health Insurance Among Retirees Aged 55 to 64 (2012)

Pre-65 retirees obtain their health insurance from many different sources, including employment-based health insurance, individually purchased insurance, and government insurance programs.

Annual Premiums for Retiree-Only and Family Coverage

Employers offering retiree health care coverage still pay the majority of the premium costs. This is true for coverage offered to pre-65 and post-65 retirees.

Post-65 Retiree Medical Plan Design

For post-65 retiree health care coverage, employers have implemented a number of techniques to control costs and provide retirees with choice. Dollar caps and placing funds in a health account are more traditional, but many employers are using/looking at private exchanges for their post-65 retirees.
