Workers At Big Companies Won't See Obamacare Sticker Shock

The National Business Group on Health said the percentage increase large companies will see next year is about on par with the 5% cost increases employers have experienced for the last two years after they make various plan design changes. Workers may face a rate increase slightly ahead of what their employers experience given the typical cost-shifting strategies companies implement.

“What we are seeing with public exchanges is that they are still going through a fair amount of plan volatility and population volatility,” Brian Marcotte, CEO of the National Business Group on Health, said in an interview. “Employers are going to do what is in the best interest of their employees and staying with the employer-based system is the best option.”

To deal with high drug costs, 38% of employers are introducing a “specialty tier within the pharmacy plan design,” the National Business Group on Health said. It’s the first time specialty pharmacy is considered the No. 1 driver of employer health costs, the business group said.
