On-Site Health Centers and Convenience Care Clinics

Why Employers Care

Besides increasing access to a convenient source of care and seeking to reduce productivity losses, employers are investing in on-site health centers to:

  • Meet employees' occupational health needs;
  • Emphasize wellness and health improvement;
  • Improve care coordination;
  • Realize cost savings, including direct health care cost savings; and
  • Improve employee recruitment and retention.

According to Mercer's 2014 National Survey of Employer-Sponsored Health Plans, 25% of large employers (500 or more employees) currently offer an on-site medical clinic for occupational health services, and 16% currently offer an on-site medical clinic for primary care services.1

Employers may also promote the use of convenience care or retail clinics due to their accessibility, lower costs than urgent care centers or emergency rooms, and their availability during hours when many physicians' offices are closed. According to Merchant Medicine, there were 1,868 U.S. clinics in operation in January 2015.2 Accenture projects that retail clinics will account for approximately 10% of non-primary care outpatient visits by the end of 2015.3

What Can Employers Do?

As the regulatory framework under which on-site health centers operate continues to change, on-site health centers must also evolve to continue to meet employers' needs. The Business Group has produced a report, On-Site Health Centers: Policies to Preserve and Promote an Effective Employer Solution, which re-examines on-site health centers and reviews the potential approaches for the appropriate regulatory environment for these centers.
