Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)

Employee assistance programs (EAPs) deliver a variety of services to assist employees (including managers) and their families in resolving various life challenges that may adversely affect job performance or personal well-being. EAPs provide confidential and timely problem identification and assistance, short-term counseling, and  if appropriate, referrals to outside providers for further assistance.

Areas frequently addressed by the EAP include:

  • Stress
  • Mental health and emotional well-being
  • Financial health
  • Legal concerns
  • Child and elder care
  • Family problems
  • Office conflicts
  • Alcohol and substance use disorder
  • Challenges with life events
  • HR and managerial services (e.g. management consultation or traumatic incident response)

EAPs are a common benefit for large employers, and according to NBGH’s Large Employers’ Health Care Strategy and Plan Design Survey, more than half of large employers (51%) offer on-site EAP services at some or all of their on-site health centers.
